Wrought Iron Gazebos: Maintenance Tips And More That You’ll Want To See …

What’s Special About Wrought Iron?

Wrought iron is one of the purest forms of iron containing only less then 0.15% of carbon. Wrought iron means iron that has been worked on by forging and hammering. This sort of iron is very malleable and ductile. It cannot be cast but can be forged and welded. Wrought iron has some excellent properties like strength and durability. It is far more resistant to rust than steel. Due to these properties wrought iron has been found very useful for constructing products that are usually kept outside in the open. However, wrought iron is very heavy and therefore not easily portable.

Wrought iron can be molded, bent and sculpted into very elaborate designs. This is the reason why it is such a popular material for outdoor furniture and gazebos. Very few materials will give you a gently shaped dome with elegant bends. Wrought iron is perhaps the best material for forging regal archways, a curved sidewall or swirling trellises. And no vine ever looked better than on wrought iron.

Wrought iron has a long history dating back to Roman times. Then the people used wrought iron to make baker’s rack, pot racks and many home décor items. Some time in the nineteenth century wrought iron began to be used for making elegant outdoor garden as well as indoor furniture. However it was as outdoor garden furniture that wrought iron made its mark. Its popularity as a durable furniture material zoomed and soon the gardens of almost all nobility began to be decorated with sturdy wrought iron furniture.

The amazing durability of wrought iron soon found applications in the construction of arbors, archways, gates, tables, patio furniture, pergolas and gazebos. Around the nineteenth century the rich and the noble were trying to improve their living standards. With increased affluence came the desire for increased leisure and entertainment. The gazebo was soon seen as a garden structure well suited to leisure and other pleasurable activities like relaxation and entertaining.

Gazebos : A Bit Of History

Gazebos are freestanding garden structures, some times found even in backyards, which have open sides but a roof over the head. You also see them in public places like parks and gardens. The gazebos are built with the express purpose of providing shade for people to rest. Gazebos in many private residences have now become much more then a place to simply rest. Bigger gazebos have been made for bigger occasions like marriage receptions. Gazebos are today made from a variety of materials like wood, fiberglass, aluminum and wrought iron.

The first gazebos were made of wood like cedar and red wood, but the wood had several disadvantages. Wood had a short life span, The life span of wooden gazebos could be increased by treating the wood. Even so the wood needed to be replaced after some time as basically the wood did not have good resistance against the elements. Extreme and poor weather conditions could easily shorten the life span of the wooden gazebo. There were further hazards in the form of pests, insects, rodents and woodpeckers.

Wrought Iron Gazebos

If you want to have a gazebo with a classy touch then go for a wrought iron gazebo. You will be amazed at the beauty of a gazebo sculpted from this wonderful material. Wrought iron gazebo is the last word for a garden statement. People will envy you for your high- end tastes. You could have a completely rust proof powder coated wrought iron or wrought iron that has a patina formed on its surface displaying the beauty of aging.

Wrought iron gazebos, it was found, could easily deal with the hazards just mentioned. They were sturdier and more durable and could endure the severest weather conditions. The advantage of wrought iron was clearly seen in increased utility of gazebos as a place to throw parties, entertain and generally have fun, shielded from the sun and rains. There is the possibility of rust forming on the surface but a well treated wrought iron gazebo should present no such problems. Wrought iron gazebos like wrought iron furniture if maintained well can last generations without any major repair.

Even when some rust does develop on the surface it is not all bad. The rust forms a layer that protects the inner layers of the wrought iron. However if there is rust it has got to be treated by professionals unless you can do it yourself. Treating rust on wrought iron is not all that difficult. These days gazebos come along with detailed instructions telling you step wise how to get rid of the rust.

They come in many styles and designs. You can get simple and iron structures that are plainly constructed. You also get intricately designed costlier ones too. More elaborate the designs costlier the gazebo becomes. Many companies that manufacture these offer accessories that match the designs of the gazebo. These include matching seats or a wrought iron dining set. They will also offer you electric lamp posts to electrify the gazebo. An electrified gazebo will allow you to party through the night.

Features You Might Want To Know About

  • The durability of wrought iron gazebos is increased by giving them a special treatment of varnish that prevents them from getting spoiled by rains or snow. Cleaning a wrought iron gazebo is a breeze. Manufacturers provide detailed step wise instruction on how to clean them. They also recommend the cleaning agents that ought to be used.
  • You must always have an eye open for chipped paints. Chipped paints allow moisture to attack the wrought iron surface and produce rust. The chipped area must be immediately given anti rust treatment. Treating rust is a easy DIY job. All it needs is sanding of the affected area and a repainting of the spot. However, if the rust has spread too much then you should call the professionals.
  • Wrought iron is somewhat vulnerable to bird droppings. The bird droppings can damage the paint layer and them peel off. That can further lead to rusting. To protect the wrought iron gazebo from bird droppings the gazebo should be cleaned whenever bird droppings are spotted on them.

Not all wrought iron gazebos are made purely from wrought iron. There are many gazebos that have wrought iron as well as wooden components.

Where To Buy These From?

Normally they are bought from home development stores or furniture dealers. However, the varieties on view at many online retailers far exceed those you will see in stores The online retailers also give attractive discounts on certain occasions for which you will have to keep your eyes and ears open. Before buying online, make a thorough inquiry about the pricing, features and shipping terms. Manufacturers usually ship the gazebos kits in a panel format. But if you want one of those ornate and classy looking models, they may not be exactly cheap.

Whatever be the kind of wrought iron gazebo you opt for, there can be no doubt it’s a great thing to have it in one’s garden or backyard. After all, who wouldn’t want to bask in the glory of having a large, gorgeously attractive 20′ x 20′ square gazebo with a lattice roof in their garden? You will have a lovely place to relax and enjoy the outdoor safe in the belief that the gazebo will be there till the last day of your life.

Dining Room Chair Cushions: 5 Wonderful Tips You May Want To See …

The main purpose of dining room cushions on the seats as well as on the chair back is to make it comfortable for people sitting on them.

They also help in protecting the dining chairs from any leaks or spills. Dining room cushions can also be used to enhance the attractiveness of the dining set and the dining area. For this purpose consumers are now being spoiled with a huge variety of dining chair cushions to choose from. You can choose from a vast array of colors that includes white, natural, green, red, blue, black, brown and many more.

Therefore they not only perform a useful function but also serve an aesthetic purpose as a decorative item. They add to the warmth and comfort of the dining chairs.

Where Are Dining Chair Cushions Used?

These are used in any kind of chairs that needs to be made comfortable for the individual sitting on the chair. You can have dining chair cushions, kitchen chair cushions, rocker cushions, outdoor cushions or bench cushions. Cushions make it easier for the people to do their work. Cushions allow people to sit or work longer hours on a chair. Without cushions you may not last even fifteen minutes on a cushionless chair.

Of all the types of cushions it is the dining chair cushions that are most treasured. That is because guests invited for meals get to have a first experience of the cushions. The comfort and beauty of the cushion can make or break a dinner party. It wouldn’t be pleasant to see guests shifting uncomfortably on badly made cushions or on chairs without cushions. The dining chair cushions are, therefore, given the utmost attention by home owners.

Dining Chair Cushion Fabrics

People try to have their dining chair cushions made from the best material possible. At the same time care must be taken to see that the fabric goes with veneer or color of the dining table and the chair. Designers are now coming out with exotic eye catching cushion styles. These included tufted cushions, cushions with braids and hand hooked cushions

The fabrics usually preferred for these extra comfortable cushions are cotton, nylon, acrylic and soft corduroy made from polyester. The cotton flannel cloth provides absorbency, the polyester gives the cushion its durability, while the nylon on the undersurface make the cushion non slip. The non slip property of nylon is important in preventing the cushion from moving around on the seat. They keep the cushion firmly in place.

There are some cushions which do away with the nylon like slip resistant fabric on the underside. Instead, long threads, called pad ties are provided. These pad ties are tied to the chair and keep the cushion in place.

Commonly, dining room chair cushions are classified as cotton, leather and polyester. Each of them comes in an amazing variety of colors and designs. Of these cotton cushions are most popular because of their soft feel and ease of use in everyday living. The leather cushions are used for leather couches. The polyester chair cushions are the toughest, last a long time, do not fade easily but get dirty fast.

Fillers For Cushions

Earlier cotton was the most common filler material. It has now been replaced in a major way by foam that comes in many qualities.

Foam: Foam cushions are available in soft, medium or firm qualities. Today foam cushions are used widely as regular and also replacement cushions. They are also foam fillers available custom made to various sizes and used in practically all kinds of furniture. Manufacturers highly recommend high density foam that is most durable. For most uses rectangular foam shapes with rounded edges are advised. Foam, however is unable to retain its shape after some time. It breaks down, forms lumps and as a consequence loses its softness. Depending on the quality you will get cheap or expensive foam fillers.

Memory foam: A new type of foam called memory foam has hit the market but is yet to prove itself popular. The technical name of memory foam is visco-elastic polyurethane foam. There are two types of memory foams; high density and low density foam. The memory foam is better able to adapt to the shape of the body and is more comfortable. It was very expensive till recently but has now become cheaper and is being used in mattresses and cushions.

Polyester fiber: The other filler material, not so popular as foam, are very fine polyester fiber. Cushions with modern shapes and styles are using these fillers. Hollow fibers are also used with them. This makes the filler very soft, allowing the filler to retain the shape of the cushions for a long time. It is better than foam in retaining its shape.

The other material that sometimes replaces cotton and wool as a filler material is polywool.

Cushion Styles

Style of the cushion depends a lot on the seat for which it is meant. If the seat is square then a square cushion will be needed for the chair. Similarly a round style cushion would be used on a round chair pad or stool seat. Watch out for deterioration of the cushions when the foam filler starts breaking down. When you are looking for replacement cushions, buy ones with polyester filler. They will last much longer.

Cushion Slip Covers

Like any other item cushions can give you long service if you take proper care of them. You can either have slipcovers that cover the entire chair or slipcovers that cover only the cushions like a pillow cover. These slip covers can be easily made at home at rock bottom cost.

You needn’t buy fabrics for them from the market. Old discarded fabrics will do the job just as well. An old matching floral skirt can be used to cover the pillow by zipping the sides and tying up the excess on the underside with a pin. A pillow case can be used as a slipcover. Here also the excess fabric on the underside can be gathered and pinned.

An old table cloth would be ideal fabric for producing a slipcover for the dining chair

Tips on Cushion Upkeep And Cleaning

Cushions, new or replacement, must be kept as far as possible in spanking new condition to make them last longer. You can of course use slip covers. But another way of protecting your cushions from soiling is by using upholstery protectors. It makes washing the stains easier. Following are some tips to keep your cushions in a good condition

1. Keep the chairs in a ventilated area to avoid coming in contact with fumes.
2. Spray some upholstery protector on a small area of the cushion. Wait for fifteen minutes. If there are no harmful reactions then spray the entire cushion. To protect the wooden portions from any damage, cover them with towels
3. The upholstery protector must be sprayed from a distance of 8 inches and the application must be light. Wait a day for the cushion to dry before using it.
4. Once the first application of spray is dry, repeat the procedure for a second coat of the spray.
5. Wash stains as they happen with mild soap and water and then apply the upholstery protector.

Glider Rockers And Their Cushions

A mother may spend hundreds of delightful hours cuddling and bonding with her precious bundle of joy on one of these chairs. Which is why they merit special mention :-)

But that’s not all - glider chairs are also recommended for pregnant women too.

The glider rocker is different from a traditional rocking chair in the way it works. Some of these chairs let you experience both a gentle rocking motion as well as a smooth gliding motion while others just glide and do not rock. They can easily be used in the gardens or patios.

Most of the times, the glider rockers come without the cushions and you need to buy them separately. In a way it is good as it provides to match your interiors the way you want. The myriad variety could in fact confuse you. And if at all they are permanent make sure you go for darker colors. 10 Easy Steps To Own Your Home Made Rocker Cushions

Get started if you have a sewing machine at home. The other things you will need are the measuring tape, spool of matching threads, chosen fabric, a pair of scissors and a few pins.

  • Neatly and evenly fold the fabric into half with the right side of the fabric unseen and the wrong side facing towards you and underneath.
  • From the folded edge place the foam pillow and calculate the fabric left over for tying.
  • Making the foam pillow your guide cut it into two halves. At least an inch must be left on all the sides.
  • Keep aside the guide pillow and securely pin the straight pins one inch away from the edges and corners. However don’t pin on all the four sides. Keep one side open for inserting the pillow and quickly sew the rest three with your hands.
  • Stitch well now the three sides on your sewing machine and once you are done remove the hand stitches earlier put by you.
  • Turn the material upside down by pulling the right side on the surface with your hands and enabling the wrong side to hide.
  • Place in or insert the pillow and small stitch the open side of the fabric.
  • For the ties, take two long strips each measuring one inch by twelve inches and place them into the wrong side of the fabric and flat iron the edges.
  • Half fold the ties at the center and iron them again and sew each tie at their edges.
  • Tie one tie to the end of the spindle end of the rocker and hand sew it to the cushion. And there you are ready to flaunt your hard work now.

Do you still want to buy new cushions for your rockers? If you find the above steps easy and simple, you can also have home stitched swivel rocker cushions.

Cleaning Tips For Your Cushions

Vacuum cleaner with attachments can work well to get rid of crumbs and dirt. Any pet hair stuck with your cushions? Roll a lint roller over your cushion and see what you get. You can use a steam cleaner if you do not want to remove the foam pillows within. The covers can be easily washed and cleaned in the washing machine. If your foam pillows fit in your washing machine, clean it by washing it on gentle. The next option is you can very well wash them in your bath tub if it is too bulky with some mild detergent and vinegar. Remember vinegar brings back freshness to your cushions. Remember to dry them well before you knot them back to their places.

Useful Tip For Slipping Cushions

In between your foam pillow place the cording with a lip to prevent slipping of your cushions. They can prove a nuisance if you had to lift and adjust slipping cushions every time. Placing a non-slip drawer liner between the cushion and the rocking chair also helps achieve a solution.

Wicker, rattan or wooden rockers; customize all with the best cushions and get ready to relax and rock indoors or outdoors.

Aluminum Patio Covers: The Advantages Are Many

Are you looking for some patio covers? Do you want something to just provide some shade like the lattice patio covers or something that gives more enclosed protection? Patio covers come in various kinds and in various materials. Also available are kits where everything is ready to be installed - a do it yourself solution. They are available in kaleidoscope of colors, a wide range of sizes, and are very easy to repair too. Only keep a few tools like the screw drivers and pliers handy. And you are in for some great times ahead.

Aluminum For Patios: The Unbeatable Advantages

Aluminum says much for itself. It needs no maintenance. Being a metal it’s naturally water proof - and it doesn’t rust either. It won’t warp or bend with the harsh weather conditions. It will not crack or chip or burn. Neither will it need to be repainted nor will the termites feast on it. What’s more - the once drab aluminum covers are now as elegant as any of the  wood covers.

Easy To Maintain

Aluminum never rusts like with many other metals. And if you are living by the sea side this proves a boon. Metal patio covers - being exposed to the sun and the salt water - have a tendency to rust. But not so with aluminum. The humid atmosphere will not harm the aluminum cover. And you don’t have to worry that your aluminum patio cover will fly away or get torn as may happen with covers made of fabric materials. Only little care is required on your behalf. And all you need to  do is some cleaning regularly. Some elbow grease, soap water, water and a brush to scrub would be what you may need.

Painting Your Patio Cover

You rarely need to paint the aluminum patio cover, but if you desire a fresh, new look, then just go ahead and paint it.
Here’s what you would need to do …

Start with some cleaning and scrubbing, followed by drying till no amount of moisture is left. Apply a layer of metal primer that is oil based - something that’s close to your choice of color for the cover. Within 48 hours apply the final coat of paint. Finally finish by applying a good quality acrylic latex paint that will ensure longer life to your completed new job.
Remember, early mornings or late evenings are the best times to get your aluminum painted.

The only apparent drawback with these covers is that sunshine heats them up. So painting may definitely help you to a certain extent here and provde a better insulation from heat. If you can live with that, then this may be a good choice.
Multiple Uses:

The patios, the court yards, or even the adjoining area all can ideally be covered with aluminum patio covers. The awnings or canopies, pergolas or the gazebos all go well covered with aluminum. Pull in few chairs and tables, place a few cushions and you can have an excellent place for parties. They are also great as car covers.
