Your backyard patio cannot be enjoyed properly and without worries unless you have a patio umbrella that effectively protects you from the sunlight and the harmful UV rays that come along with it. The shade industry has lately undergone a revolutionary change.
No longer do you have to use those old upright patio umbrellas that protect you from the sun only at noon when the sun is directly overhead. The latest in umbrella design- the offset patio umbrella- can provide you shade at all hours of the day since they are capable of being tilted. You don’t have to move around to get under the shade. The umbrella shade does the moving around for you.
Traditional patio umbrellas are kept from tipping over by passing the umbrella pole through a hole in the centre of a patio table. This results in a shaded area that is fixed. As the sun moves the shaded area changes leaving some people directly under the sun. The offset patio umbrella does away with this very glaring disadvantage.
How does it do all this? Firstly, it does away with the fixed pole through the centre of a table, in the process provided more space under the shade. Instead it has the pole at the side of the umbrella. The pole is fixed firmly to the ground. The shade of the umbrella is hung from an arm extending from the upper part of the pole This shade can be tilted or rotated 360 degrees to provide you shade at all times.
When purchasing an offset patio umbrella look for adjustable and 360 degree rotation. Most importantly ensure a sturdy base. Without a firm base the tilted umbrella can upset the overall balance.

Weather resistant means also water resistant. All patio cover fabrics are water resistant. But a small tear can let in water. Earlier patios used to be made of concrete, particularly the big ones. Today small patios are being made from a variety of materials. Many small patios are now being built of bricks. Bricks are used because it gives a classical look, is easy to install and is durable.
Patio flooring can be made from brick, stone, flagstone, stamped and colored concrete, plain concrete, concrete pavers and tile. You can select any one but concrete pavers are comparatively inexpensive. You can use only one material or have your own design by using more than one flooring material.

Patio furniture needs to be different from other types of furniture due to the fact that they are much more exposed to the elements. While patio furniture is made from wood, wicker, plastic and metal in every imaginable style all share two things in common. They must be weather resistant and durable. And in these two respects none can beat metal patio furniture.
Patio metal furniture is made from wrought iron, aluminum, cast iron and tubular metals. They are durable and built to last. The old fear of metal furniture getting rusted does not exist any more. Today’s metal furniture come with a rust resistant coating that slows down considerably the pace of rusting.
The strongest and the most durable of metal furniture are the wrought iron furniture. They are the heaviest of the lot and are practically indestructible. Wrought iron furniture are most suitable for patios that are uncovered and open at the side. They are also preferred at places where conditions are very windy. The downside to wrought iron furniture is that they are most expensive. It also requires more care. Any scratched part part must be repainted immediately to prevent rusting.
Aluminum is the most common material used for patio furniture. They are light and being stronger than plastic do not break very easily. They make for excellent poolside collapsible chairs. Aluminum furniture, though less durable than iron, do not rust.
Cast iron patio furniture are as heavy and durable as the wrought iron ones but do not make for very attractive furniture
Patio metal furniture made from tubular metals are also heavy available. Compared to plastics they are more durable but more expensive. One advantage of tubular metals is that their seats may be cushioned.

There are however some downsides. Being set in sand the concrete pavers tend to shift, requiring frequent adjustments. Unsealed pavers tend to develop an ugly efflorescence if they get too wet.
